Chennai businesses this suits
You do not need to be large or technical. Remote help works well for a Chennai firm in situations like these:
- If you run a component or fabrication unit supplying bigger manufacturers: Udyam, GST details and ISO 9001 readiness for vendor approval
- If you export software or back-office services from Chennai: ISO/IEC 27001 preparation and a tidy cloud set-up ahead of client audits
- If you run a clinic, diagnostics centre or school office: email, backups and devices looked after remotely
- If you sell textiles or home products and want to go online: marketplace accounts and listings
Tamil Nadu rules alongside your registrations
A GSTIN for a Chennai address begins with 33. Otherwise the application is the same national process on the GST portal.
Shops and establishments come under the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act, 1947. Following a 2018 amendment, an establishment with 10 or more workers registers within six months of starting; the registration lasts five years and is treated as granted if it is not issued within 30 days. Establishments with fewer than 10 workers file an intimation instead. Rules notified in 2024 moved the process online through Form Y, with the certificate issued in Form Z.
A further amendment Act was passed in 2023, so check labour.tn.gov.in for the current position before relying on those thresholds.
Professional tax in Tamil Nadu is collected by urban local bodies rather than the state, under the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 1998, and employers deduct it each half-year. Greater Chennai Corporation revised its slabs from the second half of 2024-25: half-yearly income up to ₹21,000 is not taxed, and the corporation publishes the higher slabs. Outside the corporation limits, the local body there sets the rate.
For larger projects needing several clearances, the Tamil Nadu Single Window Portal run by Guidance Tamil Nadu brings state approvals together.
Our part is GST, Udyam and ISO preparation. Shops Act and professional tax filings stay with you or your accountant.

Common questions
Our Chennai office has eight staff. Do we register under the Shops Act or send an intimation?
Under the 2018 amendment, establishments with fewer than 10 workers file an intimation within six months of starting rather than a full registration. Because a 2023 amendment also exists, confirm the current rule on labour.tn.gov.in. The filing is yours to make; we can explain how it relates to GST and Udyam.
Who collects professional tax for a Chennai office?
Greater Chennai Corporation, for establishments within its limits. Employers deduct it from salaries every half-year, using slabs the corporation revised from the second half of 2024-25. Its press release lists the amounts for each income band.
Can ISO preparation really be done without anyone visiting our site?
The preparation can. Gap assessment, procedures and records are worked through on video with your team, and evidence is shared as documents or photos. The certification audit itself is carried out by the accredited certification body you choose, on its own terms.
Do we need GST before selling on Amazon from Chennai?
Usually, but not always. Small sellers of goods can trade through e-commerce platforms without GST registration if they stay under the turnover limit, sell only within Tamil Nadu and take an enrolment number on the GST portal, among other conditions. Amazon’s own category rules also apply, so we check both before you register.
