How to register as an Amazon seller in India: documents, steps and fees

Step-by-step guide to Amazon.in seller registration: documents and GST, the Seller Central sign-up, shipping options, how selling fees work and Brand Registry.

By TrueOrbis Team · Updated · 4 min read

Amazon.in lets businesses of any size sell to customers across India. Registering as a seller is free and takes a short time once your details are ready, but choices you make during setup — GST, pickup address, shipping method and categories — affect how quickly you can start selling and what you pay. This guide walks through what you need, the registration steps and how Amazon’s fees work, based on Amazon.in’s own seller pages.

What you need to register

  • An email ID and an active mobile number.
  • A bank account for payments.
  • GSTIN — or PAN details if you sell only in GST-exempt categories.
  • A pickup address from which orders will be collected or dispatched.
  • Product information: MRP, images and a barcode (GTIN), or a GTIN exemption for products without one.

Do you need GST to sell on Amazon?

Amazon asks for GST details if you list taxable goods. If you sell only GST-exempt categories — Amazon’s examples include printed books, periodicals and some unbranded fresh produce — PAN details may be enough. GST law also has an enrolment route for very small intra-State sellers, but marketplace acceptance varies, so confirm your situation before relying on it. If you need a GSTIN, apply first: our GST registration guide explains how.

Registration steps

  1. Start registration on sell.amazon.in and sign in with, or create, an Amazon account for the business.
  2. Enter your GSTIN (or PAN for exempt categories) and business phone number.
  3. Choose your store’s display name.
  4. Add the pickup address.
  5. Select a shipping method.
  6. Add your business bank account details.
  7. List your products — either by matching existing listings or creating new ones.
  8. Launch your store and start selling.

Choosing a shipping method

Amazon offers three ways to deliver orders. Many sellers start with Easy Ship or Self-Ship to test demand, then move fast-selling products to FBA.

  • Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA): you send stock to an Amazon fulfilment centre; Amazon stores, packs and delivers it and handles customer queries and returns. Eligible products get the Prime badge.
  • Easy Ship: you store and pack the products; Amazon picks them up and delivers them to the customer.
  • Self-Ship: you store, pack and deliver orders using your own staff or a courier partner.

How Amazon’s selling fees work

Listing products is free; fees apply when you sell. They are made up of:

  • Referral fee — a percentage of the selling price that depends on the category. From 16 March 2026 Amazon.in charges zero referral fee on products priced under ₹1,000.
  • Closing fee — a fixed fee per item based on price and shipping channel; Amazon revised these from 7 September 2026.
  • Weight-handling or fulfilment fees — for Easy Ship and FBA, based on size, weight and distance; FBA also has storage and removal fees.
  • GST at 18% is added to Amazon’s fees.

Categories that need approval

Some categories are gated and need Amazon’s approval before you can list — for example grocery, baby products, health and personal care items, and certain brands. Amazon may ask for invoices, product images and licences such as FSSAI for food. Some products are restricted and cannot be sold at all. Check your category before you buy stock for Amazon.

Creating good first listings

  • Titles: up to 200 characters for most categories, without special characters such as ! $ ? _ { } ^, and without repeating the same word more than twice.
  • Main image: product front view on a white background; Amazon recommends at least 1,000 × 1,000 pixels so shoppers can zoom.
  • Enter the correct MRP, which is mandatory for most categories.
  • Use the right barcode, or apply for a GTIN exemption if your products have none.
  • Write accurate bullet points and descriptions — never claim certifications or features you cannot prove.

Protecting your brand: Brand Registry

If you sell under your own brand, Amazon Brand Registry gives you more control over your product pages and access to tools such as A+ content and Brand Stores. It is free to join, but you need your brand name or logo on your products or packaging and a pending or registered trademark for it. Filing a trademark early saves time later.

Common questions

How long does Amazon seller registration take?

Amazon says the sign-up itself takes around 15 minutes when details are ready. Verification, category approvals and creating good listings take longer, so allow a few working days before launch.

Can I sell on Amazon without a company?

Yes. Proprietors can register using their own PAN and the business GSTIN. The account and bank details should match the registered business.

When does Amazon pay sellers?

Amazon pays out on a regular cycle — every 7 days, for orders that became eligible 7 days after delivery, according to its fee page for standard sellers.
